There’ll soon be more space for the arts in Fort Greene as a house of religious cedes space to a new theater company in the neighborhood. The Irondale Ensemble Project is taking over what was once the Sunday school of the Lafayette Presbyterian Church on S Oxford St after it undergoes a $2.5 million renovation. As other reports note, the church already has a storied past in its 151 years of existence: a stop on the underground railroad, a center of debate over women at the pulpit, and as an early challenger of the Columbus expedition. The theater group is known for its off-Broadway productions and programs in public schools and prisons. Maybe they’ll add to the history of the new space.
