R.I.P. Gardel’s (?)
March 20, 2008 by Scott Lamb

We’ve always had mixed feelings about Gardel’s Garden: On the one hand, it always had great variety, a lot of charm and was incredibly handy when we needed a new pot or some soil. On the other, the prices tended towards the frustratingly high end. But we’re sad to hear the news that Gardel has sold his place, and that the quirky garden store is going to be turned into residences. (via One Hanson Place)
Update: As DK points out in the comments, Gardel’s closing looks to be only temporary. In his recent ad in the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill/Wallabout journal The Hill, it looks like he will be reopening on the ground floor of the new building:

General Nathaniel Greene, our namesake. Read more about him
I never found the variety to be that great… yes, the prices were crazy high. I am all for supporting the local guy over, say, home depot… but, I can only do so much when my wallet is feeling the sting.
Sometimes the farmer’s market in Ft. Greene Park has some great plants (pansies + other flowers + veggies) especially in the spring. And the prices are very reasonable.
Gardel is not closed - you are misinformed. See his Hill ad - he is going to build a new building in that lot. His business will return on the ground floor.
Maybe his prices were high but Gardel himself was worth it. Our stops there were like visiting an old friend. We have patronized his “garden” often and I’m happy to hear he is not closing.
what do you mean Hill ad? where can i find this? is hill some neighborhood newspaper?
I’ve only had unpleasant service there. I’d usually walk further to get to the place next door to BAM (better selection, friendlier people).
Ha - I went by the place next to BAM/One Hanson the other day - its under new ownership. When I went by, it was shut up tight and there was a broken water pipe spewing water out of the front gate and all over the ground.
I loved this place. His prices were fair and he had great selection and know how. Gardell worked hard to build a real community business where he always remembered everyone. I have been buying from him for over 7 years. My window boxes were great due to his know how, and wisdom. I hope he will have a spring sale so we can not miss a season till his new shoppe opens.
